Right! My point is, other adults can also teach these lessons to children. The person reading on the beach can politely say, “Hi kiddo, great day at the beach isn’t it! But I’m actually at an interesting part of my book right now, and I’m going to read it.” The person at the salon can say, “Nice to meet you, but I like to be quiet while I’m getting my hair done. There’s some magazines you can look at over there, though. Have fun, buddy!” It’s not hard to do, and it only takes a second. I want my kids to learn to look for other people’s boundaries, and they need to practice that sometimes. They best way to do that is to engage with others without me constantly policing it.
